SYNTHETIC · AVOID
Polyester · Nylon · Acrylic
These aren't fabrics — they're flexible petroleum plastics. Every wash sheds millions of microfibers that slip past water treatment into rivers, oceans, and the food chain.
NATURAL · CHOOSE
Cotton · Wool · Linen · Hemp
Fibers that grow from the earth can return to it. Un-dyed or vegetable-dyed, pure natural textiles can be shredded into an industrial compost pile at end-of-life.
The repair & rotate mindset
Mend
Basic hand-stitching or sashiko repair extends a garment's life by 2–3 years.
Repurpose
Worn past repair, natural fabric becomes kitchen rags, workshop towels, or rope inputs (see Module 1.4).

Check the inner labels of 10 garments and tally synthetic vs natural. Then rescue one item you'd have thrown out — mend a hole, patch a knee, or cut a ruined shirt into rags. Photograph the save.
