Trash is a design output, not a natural fact
Nature has no landfills — every output is some other process's input. So why do we? Follow one object through the nine stages of the waste chain and you'll find that trash isn't inevitable: it's decided, stage by stage, by choices that can be made differently.

Lesson 1
A thing is a decision chain
Long before anything reaches your bin, four stages have already shaped its fate. Each one is a decision someone made — which means each one can be made differently.
STAGE 1
Extraction
Every object begins as a hole in the ground, a felled tree, or a barrel of oil. Before you ever touch a thing, it carries the mines, wells, water, and energy it took to make — an embodied cost that no bin can refund.
STAGE 2
Design & packaging
Most waste is decided at the design table. Fused mixed materials, glued labels, single-use formats — these choices determine what can be reused, repaired, or recycled years before the bin. Trash is a design output, not a natural fact.
STAGE 3
Consumption
The moment of purchase is the most powerful vote in the whole chain. Choosing durable, refillable, repairable things — or not buying at all — cancels stages 4 through 8 entirely. That’s why reduce sits above everything else.
STAGE 4
Collection
Trucks, routes, transfer stations — mostly paid for by communities through taxes and fees, not by the producers who designed the waste. Extended producer responsibility (EPR) policies exist to push part of that bill back upstream.

Lesson 2
Where the system strains
After the bin, four more stages carry the load — and each has a hard limit that no amount of good sorting can fix alone. Every number below traces to a source you can visit in the World Directory.
Stage 5 · Sorting
Materials recovery facilities sort at line speed with screens, magnets, and infrared eyes (Module 2.3) — but they can only sort what design made sortable and what citizens routed correctly. Contamination downgrades whole batches.
Stage 6 · Recycling limits
Recycling is real, and structurally limited. Under current policies the OECD projects plastic use and waste to almost triple by 2060, with less than one-fifth of plastic waste recycled and about half still landfilled (OECD Global Plastics Outlook). E-waste tells the same story: of 62 million tonnes generated in 2022, only 22.3% was documented as properly collected and recycled (Global E-waste Monitor 2024).
Stage 7 · Compost & organics
The one loop nature already runs. Organics routed to composting return as living soil; the same scraps buried in a landfill become methane. This is the highest-leverage sorting decision most households make every single day.
Stage 8 · Landfill, incineration, dumping
The end of the line — the tomb from Module 1.1. The world generated 2.1 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste in 2023, heading for 3.8 billion tonnes by 2050; managing it already costs USD 252 billion a year, rising toward USD 640 billion without urgent action (UNEP/ISWA Global Waste Management Outlook 2024).

The last stage isn't a place — it's a lever. Deposit-return schemes, EPR laws, right-to-repair rules, and circular design standards attack trash where it's actually created: at the design table and in policy.

The School Waste Audit
Run the nine stages on your own school or home. For one week, tally what lands in each bin and note which stage created it (design? consumption? missing compost?). Then pick one lever: start a compost pilot for the organics you found, or host a repair day for the items that only failed at stage 6.
