A new class of materials is fermented from plants or grown inside bacteria instead of refined from crude oil. The certified operator's job is to know which claims are chemistry and which are marketing — and to route each material where it actually breaks down.

Briefing 1 · PLA, the fermented workhorse
the material
PLA (polylactic acid) is made by fermenting plant starch into lactic acid and polymerizing it into a clear, stiff plastic — the material behind most "compostable" cups and clamshells. The catch is in the fine print: PLA only breaks down under sustained industrial-compost conditions (~58°C with controlled humidity). In a backyard pile or a landfill it behaves like conventional plastic.
Routing rule: PLA belongs in industrial composting where a program accepts it — never in the recycling bin (it contaminates PET bales) and never counted on to vanish in a backyard bin.
Briefing 2 · PHA, grown by bacteria

PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates) is not chemically polymerized at all — it is synthesized inside bacteria that store it as an energy reserve when fed plant oils or sugars, then harvested from the cells. That biological origin is why many PHAs degrade in soil and even marine environments without special facilities. The trade-off: PHA costs more and is far rarer than PLA.
Operator's read: PHA's superpower is degradation without infrastructure; its constraint is supply. Watch it for films, coatings, and marine-risk applications first.

A "compostable" or "biodegradable" claim means nothing by itself. The gate is third-party certification — BPI in the US, TÜV Austria's OK compost marks in Europe — which tests that a product actually breaks down in the claimed environment. Uncertified "biodegradable" plastic is often conventional plastic engineered to fragment, shedding microplastics as it goes.
Where to verify: the BPI certified-products database, the TÜV OK compost registry, and — decisive for routing — your local composter's accepted-materials list.
